For many thousands of years, the only way humans have been able to communicate in real time with each other was in person. What is of paramount importance is not only the vocal communication but also many subtleties of body language and expression, which is often intangible.
Over the last decade, the presence of mobile phone communication has become ubiquitous in our society. Mobile phones are no longer just phones, they have much greater and ever increasing capabilities. This ability to communicate anytime anywhere with anyone has changed the way we live in many ways. Smart phones allow us instant access to the internet and a virtual infinite source of information. Mobile phones have changed the way we work, live, and love.
There are pieces missing though. Absent is the expression in a loved one's eyes, or the intimacy of a long embrace. A text message masks the sarcasm in someone's voice, or the sincerity of another's affections. Friendly gatherings are interrupted by phone calls, emails, and text messages. This efficiency of communication has increased the pace of our lives. People are reliant on these machines; they crave them like an addiction. Sometimes it is important to step away and just disconnect.
