Dog Cheese was a short lived mid 80's LA based band. The line-up was: Michael Landau - Guitar, Vinnie Colaiuta - Drums, Steve Tavaglione - Keys/Sax, and Larry Klein - Bass. Not too much is known about the band, but there are one or two live bootlegs floating around plus some studio demo material. This video is a bunch of Landau photos with a Dog Cheese track titled "Dog Cheese" from the rare studio demo material.

Michael Landau was interviewed by Abstract Logix in 2006, and was asked about the Dog Cheese band. This is what he had to say...

Abstract Logix interviw with Michael Landau in 2006 (#95)

AL: Mike, someone was telling me about a band you had with Vinnie Colaiuta called 'Dog Cheese', what was that all about?

ML: "Dog Cheese" was put together right after Joni's '84 tour. It was Vinnie, Larry Klein, Steve Tavaglione and myself. We played original music that Larry and I wrote, and played around L.A. mostly at the "Baked Potato". There are some rough cassette's floating around of live shows, it was some pretty slammin stuff. We never did a record though... Its too bad.

AL: Whats the probability that some of the rough tapes can be gotten hold off ? What was the material for Dog Cheese, were you guys taking some of Jonis compostions at all?

ML: There just a stereo mike "walkman" recordings, too rough to put out... It was all original material by Larry, Steve & myself.

ENJOY!

  • Only info I have - soundboard recordings from an unknown studio in Los Angeles recorded around 85-86.

  • I saw three Dog Cheese shows and they still are the best fusion shows I've ever seen.

  • In 84-85 I was 11 and I befriended Vinnie Colaiuta (somehow) at a NAMM show. Sum of my best memories ever were having 2 take a nap (because they usually played the Baked Potato on Sundays and I lived in OC and had school the next morning) and my Dad would drive me up 2 watch/hear Vinnie. He would get us in and save a table close 2 the drums. It effected me DEEPLY (ESPECIALLY at that age) 2 witness those Dog Cheese shows (tons of em) and I'm forever thankful 2 Vinnie for it. LOVE Vinnie!
