Recent comment from subscriber,
"i suppose you can use that to make a torch too... Any ideas on how to make natural long burning torches in the forest? I can't find any info anywhere.keep on going ryan, great easy realistic info!"
And This was my reply,
"I've made torches by wrapping birch bark around the end of a stick. Thick layers of it. Birch bark has resin and oils in it that ignite like paper and keep burning for awhile. The next thing i'm gonna tell you, you should only do in an emergency or when it's completely nessesary. You can take your knife and cut a thick strip of bark of the tree. It will peel of the tree in a circle all the way around. This works great. IT WILL most likley kill the tree. Practice: only dead tree or outer shavings".

  • if you remove too much bark from a living tree, you expose the bark (cork) cambium, bark producing layer gets infected real quick, look after trees they will look after us

  • Thanks Nighthawk! You are the man. Its funny how people post comments like that and you can tell they obviously dont know what they are talking about. • And if you really are prepared why wouldnt you just have a flashlight? noob.

  • Great!!! Thank you!

  • if you only have string or vines to lash the torch together with you can pinch it inbetween 3 or 4 (or more) sticks and lash the sticks together where the string wont burn. using a bunch of sticks can also help increase the duration that the torch will last by slightly limiting oxygen to the flame.

  • Can you use coal?

  • try adding some pine sap/pitch for a longer burn

  • @D7eadnaught it will survive as long as you dont ring bark it.

  • sweet torch

  • say you don't have snare wire, could you use roots?

  • @yardsalefrog read my two posts about natural and fast torches...
