She's always made the hard decisions because women have always had to make the hard decisions, especially in a man's world. That's the whole point of her character. She knows she's beautiful, so she's using the tools she has to get what she wants because she has no other way. She's dismantling the masters house with his own tools, within his bounds. This shows set in the 60s, remember that. Joan is badass.

Yes, Peggy and Joan represent the two different kind of trajectories for women, historically. Peggy is the proto-feminist character who we all relate to from our 21st century perspective, but Joan is representative of a lot of women who were put in these situations. Also, Peggy was never faced with this choice, this kind of pressure. This is just the way that Joan knows, not the best choice but the one that she hopes might get out of the situation.
