"A New Direction in Dance, pt. 2", 1978. Shot on 16mm film.
"A New Direction in Dance" showcases a group improvisation done by dancers who rely entirely on their movement-sense to communicate with one another. Every movement of the dance grows out of the feeling of the group at the moment of creation.
Barbara Mettler, dancer, dance educator, author, and film and video producer, developed her own style of modern dance, which emphasized improvisation. Her core principles were beauty, freedom, and democracy. Dance was conceived as a fundamental human activity, of which all people are capable, as opposed to an elite, choreographed, performance art.
The Barbara Mettler Archive came to Hampshire College in 2003. For more information: mettlerdance.hampshire.edu
