JJ 'Jake' Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a private detective who is hired by Evelyn Mulwray to investigate her husband Hollis, the engenier of the water department, because she thinks he's having an affair. Gittes finds out later that her client wasn't the real Mrs. Mulwray.
After her husband dies at the water reservoir, Jake gets deeply involved in the case. He has a romance with the real Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) and finds out she is the daughter of Noah Cross (John Huston), one of the most powerful men in Los Angeles, who has interests in the lands near the reservoir. Chinatown won the Academy Award of Best Original Screenplay in 1975.

    @Chris LaFleur because at the end of the film, Giddes couldn't catch the bad guys, they got away scot free without any punishment. And it's like Chinatown, something you can't conquer. The screenwriter Robert Towne explains that a cop once told him that they never patrol Chinatown because they can't understand their language, so the cops just leave it alone

    @NotoriousMass when he says that it's basically a metaphor for life. Chinatown stands for something that you can't get inside of, you can try your best but its pointless because you'll never conquer it, it's too hard, it's too evil, it's like trying to understand a whole other language like being in Chinatown and not knowing Chinese. It's saying that Giddes couldn't catch the bad guys at the end, they were too powerful
