My favorite verse of this hymn says, "elect from every nation, yet one o'er all the earth; her charter of salvation one God, one Faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she
presses with every grace endued." it reminds me that eventually our shameful divisions will be healed, and Catholics and Lutherans and Presbyterians and everybody will again be the obviously "one holy, catholic, and apostolic church," that we confess most Sundays.
The hymn's lyrics were written by Anglican priest Samuel John Stone in South Africa in 1860, in response to the unorthodox teaching of South African bishop, John Colenso.
The tune used in most settings of the hymn is "Aurelia," which was composed by Samuel Wesley, grandsom of Charles Wesley. The tune and the lyrics were not composed together.
