A tugboat is one or two locomotive engines with a small ship built around it (or them). All power. Check out the video for Tractor Tug Ted. It's a monster. Yes, many tugs use EMD power. The main difference is that the marine engine sumps are deeper than the railroad ones to allow for oil level changes caused by waves. They don't want them sucking air.

Great video, Didn't know EMD used some of their engines in tugboats. EMD usually makes engines for locomotives and stuff.

@carpetime I usually hafta wear ear plugs and hearing protectors (muffs) when the mains are running; Just running the generator as I am in the video, ear plugs are enough.
Interestingly these turbo engines arent as loud as blower engines; oh, they'll still make you deaf, just not as quickly, lol.

Glad you enjoyed the video. While EMD's primary market is indeed locomotives and has always been, theyre also very popular out here on the water; I would say they are still the dominant engines in the 2000-7200 hp class of boats, although Cat has taken alot of business away with their 3500 and 3600 series engines. We just repowered one of our boats, swapping out a pair of 16-645 E-2's for a pair of electronic 8-710 G7 Tier II engines. I'll be putting up a video for that very soon.

@eajosephedward All EMD's were developed for the rail industry and then adapted to other markets, i.e. marine, power generation, drill rigs etc. This engine is a 645 turbo; the railroads used them by the thousands in 12, 16 and some 20 cylinder configurations, but they are dying breed. Most railroads are running the 710's nowaday where they run EMD's

Ho are those EMD's cooled? Not sure if pumping in the outside water for coolant would be a good idea, so I'm thinking a closed system, fresh water cooled with a heat exchanger . Was I right?

@DG19075 Yes, for this boat it uses a 'closed' system, or keel cooled as its more commonly known.
Im currently on a different boat than the one in the video; this boat is raw water cooled. Sea water is drawn into the engine room by a pump on each engine and is passed thru a water to water shell and tube type heat exchanger (sea water cools the engines fresh water, then the fresh water is passed thru an oil cooler before returning to the engine.)
