  • If Erik Satie and Claude Debussy played jazz piano, they'd have been Bill Evans. No one even comes close to his atmospheric sound. SO deep, SO beautiful...and HE'S worried about not having the "dimension" to be a solo pianist? Are you kidding me? BILL EVANS? One has to wonder what he heard in his head if he things he didn't have "dimension". Good lord! To take a line from the good ol' Grateful Dead: He's not the best at what he does, he's the ONLY one who does what he does.

  • I don't know how much exposure Bill had to formal study of harmony. He really taught himself and I think this is his genius. He keeps talking of the "structure" which is the bare harmony over a pedal point. Like many geniuses, he is a student of harmonic science but, for us, he is a DOCTOR and THEN he is amazingly musical. I don't think there is any university that can teach this. I've looked! We were lucky to have him around! Wow!

  • I'm definitely transcribing this

  • Jazz theory is so much cooler than classical theory :)

  • @JHJennings Bill graduated with a music degree from S. Louisiana University, and studied music composition at Mannes College of Music in New York.

Actually, jazz harmony, or as Bill here refers to as a tunes "structure" has been commonly taught in most major colleges for decades. But even so there is only one Bill Evans who undoubtedly has influenced countless others.

  • @mattleemattlee123 Don't forget Bill was a devotee of Ravel as well. Erik Satie is reflected in Bill's "Piece, Piece" from Bill Evans - Everybody Digs Bill Evans LP - Riverside records

  • marion no mean pianist herself was obviously blown away with this wonderful mini masterclass..just like the rest of us.wonderful.many thanks.

  • @mattleemattlee123 Beautifully said.

  • Listen to Marian get totally blown away between 5:00 and 5:15. This is a real treasure. Getting a glimpse into the genius of Bill Evans.

  • I love the way you hear the bass notes even if he doesn't play them. Those rich rootless voicings just rule!

  • absolute genius and it talks also
