When you initially pulled the stator and motor apart,did you find the stator cracked from rust buildup under the motor? If so how did your local machinist proceed to repair it?J Marcos did a similar repair and restoration on a sd10 a few years back where rust had actually cracked the stator where the motor mounts and tilted the rotor much the same way yours is.Water freezing at the mounting location could possibly cause the same condition.....

@hobbeekid - Yes, the stator was cracked where the motor attached. The original plan was to have the machine shop mill out the damaged area and then fabricate and bolt in a new mounting plate. In the meantime I located a parts siren. It had a decent stator that only needed to be blasted and painted, so the original repair idea never happened. Freezing water probably contributed to the failure as you suspected.
