I've wanted to make one of these since high school physics,

What do you mean by 5 turn? 5 separate coils or one coil done over 5 times.

I had plans for a 5 stage with separate capacitor banks, I think I calculated that it could theoretically shoot a projectile at almost 3 times the speed of sound.

but all those capacitors and magnetically enhanced copper wiring is really expensive and coordinating the pulses in over 5 coils was always going to be difficult. was going to use light based switches.

Don't be a fool, there are such things as super capacitors. It's just a name for caps that have extremely high farrad ratings, like 3,000 and above or something like that.
