Yes all MB I6 engines from the 50s to the 90s have that same wonderful and distinct sound.

@ScubaSteveM45 thats quite high most cars ive known will cruise at 70 mph at 1800-2000 rpm no problem

@W201029 I envy your German roads :-) the best I can safely do on these American highways is 145kmh in brief instances and 130kmh if traffic is light most days. Most people in my country are unfortunately too complacent about driving to drive any bit faster, well that and our highways are not as well maintained as the Autobahn, there are some potholes quite regularly and most sections large trucks and buses weigh down the surface into huge tire ruts in each lane.

What's so bad about how the 190E goes 3,000 RPM at 100kmh? Maybe the simpler configuration of these transmissions is why you (and I) are still able to drive this cars so many years later after they were built

@ScubaSteveM45 On the highway (Autobahn) in germany, i drive about 160- 180kmh, sometimes top speed for longer distances. So the fuel consuptions is on automatic much higher.

I have one of these. It's a superb engine with smooth and linear power delivery. It's a bit down on power by today's standards but still satisfying as a daily driver. The only letdown is the somewhat clunky automatic gearbox that starts in 2nd gear and has no overdrive in 4th causing it to rev at around 3000rpm at 100km/h.
Mind you, my torque converter is starting to give out so I finally have an excuse to do a 5-speed swap. Just need to get the parts together...

@328ie30
it is a 5-speed manual gearbox... with the long (3.27) differential in back. In the 5th gear and 3000rpm i can get 140km/h.

@W201029
Yes, I had already realized that but thanks for confirming. My 2.6 is an automatic and I love everything about the car except the transmission. I saw one of your other vids that features a 3.0 conversion, also 5-speed. How would you rate the 3.0 versus the 2.6 in terms of performance and fuel consumption. Just curious. Thanks!

@328ie30
the fuel consumption of the 3.0 is the same as the 2.6. The 3.0 is much powerfuller as the 2.6... the reason is not only the higher hp... its the earlier peak of the higher torqu. At only 3000rpm become the 3.0 a very strong power. this both engines looks like the same but the characteristic of the power is very different. So the 2.6 need higher rev. for power.
