ALM 89B on the 15 on the Strand operated by East London. When these were refurbished with new engines, they gained the nickname 'Dartmaster' as they sound like Darts.

  • Does this one have a cummins ISBe engine as I've been on with with a cummins 6BT engines. In another way new darts agains old darts in the sound from the engine bay.

  • I'm not really sure, sorry.

  • It will have a Cummins ISBe engine and an Allison automatic gearbox hence the Dennis Dart sound. Unfortunately the replacement of the AEC gearbox has resulted in the loss of most of the Routemaster's character. This particular bus ran for Blackpool Transport until 1997.

  • Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

  • Yes it would.

  • this sounds more like the 6BT

  • 5.9 6bt? would it be powerful enough?

  • I must correct myself. The original Routemaster gearbox was made by Self change gears (SCG) and was type GB32. It was mounted in the centre of the bus. The sound was very similar to BR's first generation diesel multiple unit trains. The 'Dartmasters' have an Allison gearbox bolted on the engine bell housing. They sound bland like a Dennis Dart.
