---
Well, after DAYS' worth of rather painstaking planning and a goodly amount of HEX editing, it's finally finished! Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Plus is meant to show some of the basic things that can be done with Yoshi Magic (in accordance with some HEX editing). For the best viewing experience, please leave annotations on throughout the duration of the video.

In more general standards, the stats in Superstar Saga+ are all-around bigger, and I'd like to think more balanced (I'm looking at you, Mush Badge), than those in the original game. Please note that all the enemies' stats were designed based on the assumption that the player would fight every group of enemies in the game (save for those in Beanbean Castle Outskirts) exactly once, and obtain the Bonus Ring at the earliest possible time. If you do not do one or both of these in your playthrough, do not be surprised if the game becomes unplayably difficult at some point or another.

Video was captured in VBArr 23.2; all gameplay was taken from jdaster64's Superstar Saga+ mod.

The IPS file for Superstar Saga+ can be found at the link below; use Lunar IPS (link below) or such to patch it to an unmodified North American Superstar Saga ROM. DO NOT POST OR REQUEST LINKS TO THE ROM.

Music: "Super Mario Bros. 3 Ending Theme", NES Speed, by the Big Band of Rogues (courtesy of KH990j and lesterman of YouTube).

  • Such an extraordinary hack. o.o SUB!! X3

  • I done everything from your links, but i always get a black screen when i start a new game. Any ideas why that is happening?

  • @StarcraftTerran No problem; I didn't know about the vast majority of the hidden spots either before I started hacking. And yes, Mini Mario will detect any hidden Chuckle Beans.

  • @llproductions2006 wow thats tricky! so the hammer mario will always detect underground items right? anyways thank you SO much for helping me!

  • @llproductions2006 im a bit confused, so i got a badge from mom piranha from swing bros, is that the rare one or not. Gamboy horror Sp will work 100% on the three bosses, and after those bosses, even with the gameboy horror sp, the chance of drop is only 1/31? also, are are the bosses drop only one kind of item, or is there a normal drop and a secret drop?

  • @StarcraftTerran As for the Chuckle Beans, most of the rest are in Chucklehuck Woods (look for two little tufts of grass stacked vertically - it's hard to describe, use Mini-Mario to look for them), or in cave areas near lighter-pink rocks. Three others are on three of the four pillars with bean statues in the castle outskirts area.

There MAY also be one Hoo Bean I forgot to mention on top of the pillar next to pipe #5 (in CW). If there isn't one there, it's probably a Chuckle Bean instead.

  • @StarcraftTerran From Mom Piranha to the end of the game, Swing Bros. has about a 1/4 chance of getting you all of the bosses' gear (except Piranha Bean). The Gameboy Horror SP, however, works ONLY on Popple (the third time), Piranha Bean, and Hermie III, and can be gotten before fighting any of them (though Hermie III requires some backtracking). After those bosses, the "rare item" is actually the NORMAL item drop, but only has a 1/31 chance of being dropped.

  • @llproductions2006 ok, so from mom piranha to piranha bean, the only way to get the secret is from swing bros right? So basically, i can use swing bros to get all the secret items except for piranha bean right? Even though its impossible to finish hoo beans by piranha bean, is it possible to finish the chuckle bean before that? Also, one more question: besides the statue and the sprout, how many more of these instances did i miss? xD

btw. thanks so much for replying to my comments so quickly!

  • @StarcraftTerran And yes, in most cases, you can use Swing Bros. to get any secret items, but since you fight the Piranha Bean boss with just Luigi, you don't have that option.

  • @StarcraftTerran Not all Chuckle Beans are hidden under those sprouts; there are other things to watch out for; in Woohoo Hooniversity, check next to the bean-person statues, for instance.

I believe that I showed all of the added/changed Hoo Beans in the video; the rest of them are either ones that are unchanged, or that were formerly visible Hoo Bean blocks. You can see my Hoo Beans Compilation video for the locations of most of these.

  • @llproductions2006 41 chuckle beans?! you mean there are 41 sprout looking things?! wow, i must have missed a lot then..

as for hoo beans, i still need 12 more. my question is how many hidden blocks did you have to add to fulfill the 35 requirement?

btw, can't you use swing bros to get the secret item?

    thanks

  • @StarcraftTerran There weren't enough beans to get all the drinks before the Mom Piranha in the actual game. Personally, I always thought it a bit cheap that you could get six of the seven drinks before Woohoo Hooniversity, so I elected to change that. However, since the Piranha Bean's rare drop cannot be gotten without the Gameboy Horror SP, which requires all seven drinks, I made them attainable before that. There are exactly 35 Hoo Beans and around 41 Chuckle Beans before that boss.

  • im not so sure i like this one. i played through this game at least 4 times and there are a couple of problems.

    1. there isn't enough hoo beans. the ones that i need are replace by hee beans

    2. not enough chuckle beans. its suppose to be the most common one, but since all the X has been replace with woo beans, its even rarer than hoo beans.

the two combined means that i can't even get 5 drinks before the university...

so my question is:is there enough of both beans before the mom piranha?

  • awsome hack, its really fun and harder than the original which i like.

  • @WayoshiM Not impossibly so, but I did want it to be roughly the same length regardless of equipment/level. Keep in mind that Mario has less HP and DEF than Luigi, so 125 out of 400-some HP is not unreasonable for a should-be-really-easily-guarded attack.

  • Looks great, but you didn't make the final battle too hard... did you? lol
