Many protests have taken place in defence of education and against the proposed cuts and closures of schools by various councils across Scotland but the one that has been the most severe in its plans for cuts has been Glasgow City Council which plans to close as many as 25 with a possible additional 34 after that. Large numbers marched around the town centre and held a rally in front of the City Chambers in Glasgow's George Square. In front of the main door to the council Chambers, this working mother in an emotive speech asks just how she can be expected to be able to take one child to nursery in one direction then another young child to a new far-away school in another direction after the closure of the one nearby, and still be able to get to her work on time. The council, responsible for the closures, are expecting the impossible. They are effectively denying parents the right to work when they provide so few schools so far apart that there is no time for parents to accompany the infants to school and still arrive at work on time. Yet these are the same politicians who criticise people who don't have jobs. Do they expect people to fly from one school to the next in 5 minutes like Mary Poppins?!
Face aux menaces de fermeture de 25 écoles maternelles et primaires dans une seule ville, les parents d'élèves protestent.

  • They want to send the kids from many primary schools to fewer superschools to cut down on school staff and have the kids travel long distances in the process, never mind that it makes it almost impossible for a parent to work when they have to first of all take one kid to a nursery in one direction then another kid to a far-off primary school in another direction. The parents recently stood at the polling stations to campaign against Labour for voting to close their schools.
