Beverly Sills Soprano " Oh, quand je dors"(Oh, While I Sleep),
Beverly Sills/Andre Kostelanetz 1976 LP recording by Columbia Records.
Composed by Franz Listz, and poem by Victor Hugo.

Oh, quand je dors (Oh, While I Sleep)

Oh, while sleep, come to my bedside,
As Laura appeared to Petrarch,
And in passing let your breath touch me....
All at once
I shall smile!

In my troubled mind,
where perhaps there is ending
A dismal dream that has lasted too long;
Let your face rise like a star...
All at once my dream
Will become radiant!

Then on my lips, where a flame fluters,
A flash of love purified by God himself,
place a kiss, and be tranformed from angel
into a woman....
All at once my soul will awaken!
Oh, come,
as Laura appeared to Petrarch.

  • my wife and I both are fans of your beautiful little movies. We are old enough to have watched her on the Johnny Carson show.. I will never forget that Johnny asked her about her philosphy of life. She said you can choose to be happy or sad and I choose happy.

  • Thanks !!!! as always !

    And.....Yes !......

I did not have the opportunity to watch that show......But her answer so perfectly suits Ms Sills strength and the beauty in her singing and her life lived.

  • This makes me cry and miss her so much!!!

  • @Sjambro have you heard her "casta diva"?!?! A-MAZING!

  • @meltzerboy. I do not think confusion is innate unless one is mentally ill or under the influence of the wide array of resources you have listed. Suicide is not a resource dearest professor, surely know that. Death is not a party to crash uninvited. Please consider that angle in your hypothesis. Best wishes with your research. I noted that' love' was missing from your list. You might want to investigate that as well.

  • @meltzerboy And to escape this innate confusion we turn to a variety of resources, including sex, drugs, religion, philosophy, the arts, science, money, power, war, fantasy, psychosis, suicide. My hypothesis, still in its early stages.

  • @meltzerboy As far as I recall we never veered from a musical discussion at all. It was about Sill's " Cheerfulness" rather than happiness. However, let me see what I can come up with from my right and left hemispheres. In such art forms as classical music there are certain rules that apply if one is to be taken seriously as an artist. One who sings out of key, has dreams of becoming an opera star is deluded with the subjective sentimental opinion of relatives. Out of tune with truth= discord

  • @TruthPorn Exactly the point. This is why people often feel confused; there is a biological basis for the feeling. Sanity need not be objective; there is a fine line between sane and insane, to use the legal lingo, or normal and abnormal in the psychological sense. Not only is the meaning strongly influenced by sociocultural factors but also by biological underpinnings.

  • @meltzerboy Your brain may be divided biologically but to compartmentalize your thinking into two opposing senses of consciousness would suggest to me that you are dealing with confusion rather than renunciation of any concept. Particularly that of subjective or objective goodness. Need sanity be objective?
