Today we are going to be installing wiring harness part number 118175 on a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. OK, we are in the trunk now, and we are going to go ahead and locate the wires that we are going to be tapping into for the wiring harness. I went ahead and removed the bottom carpeting pieces to give me a little bit more room to work. Over here on the drivers side, you can see if I remove this little lid for this compartment here and pull back this piece here, that will give us access to the wires here on the drivers side. We can access 4 of the 5 wires right over here. We are going to need to run a lead over to the passengers side tail light assembly to make our connection there. We need to go ahead and figure out which wire goes with which function we are looking for. It appears to be the green wire with the yellow stripe is the left-turn signal. Next, I am going to test for the running-light function, and that wire appears to be the green one with the white stripe. Next, we are going to go ahead and test for the brakes. OK, and that appears to be just the solid green wire.
With those three functions found, we can go ahead and start connecting our converter. As you can see, all of the functions we just tested for are right on the one side of the harness. We have a white wire with a ring terminal on it this is going to be our ground wire. So we are going to need to find a substantial piece of metal here to ground that too. I think I am actually going to go ahead and take apart this rear threshold piece and maybe pull back this carpeting a little bit to see if I can find a decent grounding point. And by removing this it will also give us a route to run the wire over to the passengers side. And you can see with the threshold removed and the carpeting pulled back, we can go ahead and mount our ground screw somewhere in this area here. So I am going to go ahead and make my connections here on the drivers side. We are just going to take some basic quick connect here. And what we want to do is just put that over the existing wire that we are going to be connecting to, and then we can slide the wire from our harness that we are going to be adding to it. And then just going to get a basic pair of pliers and just crimp those down.
And again, on the harness here the yellow is going to be our left-turn function the red is our brake light the brown is our running-light feed and again, the white is a ground. And then I am just going to take a self-tapping screw and go ahead and drill into the metal here to provide my ground. OK, and then the only connection we have left to make here is the right-turn function, which is the green wire. As you can see, when I removed the threshold piece here, you can see the bundle of wires here that are coming across. These are actually the wires that are feeding the right-side tail-light assembly. So we can actually find the right-turn signal in here. And it looks like it is the black wire with the green stripe on it that we are going to be connecting to.
And lastly we want to go ahead and secure our converter box. To do that, you can see here on the back side of it we have got some double-sided tape. We just want to find a good mounting area for it. And I think I am probably just going to mount it right here. And this will allow us to get our carpeting and everything back together without any interference. OK, with all of the connections made, we just want to go ahead and tape up all of our connectors and put our vehicle back together, and then the installation will be complete. And this will conclude the installation of wiring harness part number 118175 on a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta.

@kafox120 If you visit etrailer(dot)com and use the fitguide (the box in the center of the top of the page) and find the wiring for your Jetta, there will be full instructions for the specific kit available. You can also ask one of our experts (there is a link on the bottom of the page) if you have any specific issues with installations. They would be happy to help you if you are having trouble!

I just bought a Draw-Tite hitch and wiring kit for my 2002 Jetta. While this is helpful to some degree, it would be nice if it was a bit more detailed--particularly when talking about what wire to test. I guess I'm looking for a detailed step-by-step explanation of wiring each wire. I just would like to avoid the potential for wiring the wrong wires together. And to think I use to work on F-16s for the Air Force:/
