This is the procession that takes place in our small little town each year. From Sunday right through to the Monday after the next Sunday, there are daily processions. In this one they turn off all the street lights and several of the blocks are plunged into complete darkness. This particular procession - the solemn procession - is used to remember when Jesus was taken down from the cross. Nazarenos (Nazarenes) are those people with the pointy hats... also known as capirotes. To us in the West they closely resemble the KKK but are not at all related. In other processions they often hand out candy to the kids, they come in a variety of colours and are related to a specific kind of float which a group of men (Costaleros) will carry through the town. The loud metallic clanking sound is the leader of the floats banging against the float side to let all the Costaleros know when to lift, when to start swaying, when to start walking and when to put the float down, depending on the number of clangs. They are then followed by a group of kids/teens who beat drums as loud as their little arms permit. It is quite creepy but definitely a sight to see... It also happens around 2am in a residential area. Unfortunately the other processions do the same only most of the time we have to work/go to school in the morning only they are accompanied by brass bands too.
