Two quick goals in the first period set the pace, while two more quick goals in the second paced the Abbotsford HEAT to a 4-2 win over the Rockford IceHogs in AHL action on Friday evening.
Cam Cunning and Jamie Lundmark scored just 19 seconds apart mid way through the first period to get things going. Cunning sniped a bullet over the shoulder of Hogs goalie Corey Crawford to make it 1-0 at 14:06. As that goal was being announced in the building, Jamie Lundmark potted his 5th of the season, as he neatly tipped home a Gord Baldwin point shot past Crawford to make it 2-0 Heat after one period.
In the second period, the HEAT kept the pressure on the IceHogs. Garth Murray used great hustle to score shorthanded for the Heat. Picking up a loose puck in the Hogs zone, Murray played give and go with David Van Der Gulik, snapping a shot past the out of position Crawford to make it 3-0 Abbotsford. After Rockford scored to make it 3-1, Abbotsford returned the favour as Jason Jaffray scored his team leading sixth of the season, finishing a Colin Stewart fake shot then pass to a wide open Jaffray. Corey Crawford was yanked by Hog's Head coach Bill Peters at that point, but the damage was done...4-1 HEAT after two.
In the third period, West Vancouver's Bracken Kearns, son of former Canuck Dennis Kearns, scored to make the score 4-2 HEAT, but Leland Irving would once again shut the door for Abbotsford. Irving picked up his fourth consecutive win, making 33 of 35 saves on the night.
