It is a generally accepted axiom among scholars (majorly pro-EU ones) that the EU has a gross democratic deficiency, albeit wielding enormous sums of power over all member-state citizenry; but here's a very brief video denoting particular causations of the deficit - and why it is essential that Britain withdraw.

you the council of europe is an ELECTED institution, it includes the head of states democratically elected by their own people.
