Jane Austen's Emma is quite possibly my favorite novel of all time. There's just something about Emma's transformation that you can't find in even Elizabeth Bennett, and Mr. Knightley's undying loyalty and hope to help Emma become a better person that I have yet to see in any other fictional male character. While the film isn't nearly as wonderful as the book (but when is it ever?), I still love it for what it is, and after hearing this song I just *had* to make a fanvid for it.

The vid is from Mr. Knightley's POV, and explores his reaction to the arrival of Frank Churchill and how Frank has dragged Emma into his web of lies and, as a result, leads Emma to act in a truly horrid fashion. Mr. Knightley tries to help Emma without revealing his true feelings, but, as in the book, it isn't until Emma realizes her own feelings for Mr. Knightley that she recognizes her faults.

  • Have you not seen the BBC version. You might like that one even better. Great video.

  • Yep, I saw the BBC one, but I preferred this version. Maybe it's because, as AnitaClue said, nobody tops Northam's Knightley. But I also felt that the BBC version was too serious at times, and considering that Emma was Austen's most lighthearted novel as it was more about the characters than about social commentary. Paltrow's portrayal also more closely mirrored my image of Emma than Beckinsale's (I know, I'm in the minority here).

  • @SVEvenstar There is an even newer version staring johnny lee miller which is better than the beckinsdale one

  • @KatiRaAliesse I saw the newest one as well and while it was better than the Beckinsale version I find that I still prefer the Gwyneth Paltrow version. :-)

  • Ah, I didn't know this movie existed! Even though Emma was probably one of my least favourite of Austen's creations, it was an enjoyable story.

Your video was very nice. The song didn't really seem to match with the images to me, but that's likely because I haven't seen the film. I look forward to your future videos.

  • Thanks for commenting! The song, IMO, is about how someone the singer loves/the relationship has changed significantly, which is exactly what happens because of Frank Churchill. Take, for example, this segment: "I came across a fallen tree/I felt the branches of it looking at me/Is this the place we used to love?...Oh simple thing where have you gone?/I'm getting old and I need something to rely on." I don't know. People interpret this song differently, but this is what popped into my head. :-)
