If you go to a site with demos from a book then you expect the stuff to work ... enough said. Lots of people have done a lot better stuff, that looks better and actually works.
2)They are a little dated looking, but that's why there are UI designers and backend programmers... if you can write amazing server-side stuff, no-one should really expect them to be able to make an amazing user interface.
He is a pretty funny guy. Unfortunately I took a look at his website and the examples didn't work properly in IE. He even said in this talk that he tests in two browsers and IE wasn't one of them. It's unacceptable to present material that doesn't work on what, 90% of the browser traffic. Also the widgets/effects he presented are so 90s. Virbating text messages and crap looking windows, what's that all about.

1)IE is no longer 90% of traffic.
