At Macy's on State Street it's the "Season of Light" and allusions to traditional Christmas themes have been ruthlessly purged from the window displays. You won't hear anything you recognize as a Christmas song as you walk around the store.

It also appears that Macy's may be treating Chicago as secondhand city. A number of the windows appear to be smaller knock-offs of windows appearing in Macy's flagship store in New York.

Some of the Macy's windows wouldn't come up to the standards set by dollar store managers.

All in all, Macy's' windows struck me as a very shabby and dishonest effort, an insult to Chicago and a raucous Bronx cheer to the spirit of Christmas.

  • It was Target the screwed up Marshal Field's and it was Macy's that was able to salvage the remains. All so people like you can come downtown during the holidays with your families and bitch and whine about how things aren't the way they used to be. There's a lesson for the kids.

  • You really are a fool. Why don't you walk a block south and marvel at Carson's too? Oh wait, you can't because it's a vacant building now. Had it never been for Macy's acquiring the company, your beloved Marshal Field's building would boarded up, crumbling memory that blatantly illustrates you becoming nothing but an old coot.

  • geeeeeees. Chicagos a dead town. Wheres all the people?

In new york city the sidewalks are packed in December!

  • You are welcome and thank you Joe for all the great videos1 Loved the ones of the developments on Chicago's west side where I grew up when it was nice..Also the grove in Forest Park my great adopted and most likely life long home town ( 20 plus years now! ) Happy new year to you Joe!

  • Wow, I remember Marshal Fields being a wonderland during the Christmas season, when I was a kid back in Chicago during the 1970's. Its been nearly 30 years since I have seen this Chicago landmark again, its really sad for me to see that Macy's owns it now.

  • SO CLEAR AND AWESOME
