For the It Gets Better Project

Tim Trent, 58 year old gay Englishman, outed badly in school at Epsom College who chose not to die by his own hand while seriously scared of going back school the next day and terrified of being sent by his parents to be "cured", tells his sometimes moving story. To see more, visit http://timtrent.blogspot.com/2010/10/it-gets-better.html

This is my story for the It Gets Better project.

You don't have to wait. You can make it get better.

If you are a parent and love your child, have you said to them this simple thing:

"Some people fall for girls, some for boys. If you come home with a girlfriend or a boyfriend, we will love you just the same, and we hope we will like them. But the most important thing for us is that you are happy."

Copy this and pass it on as far as you can. Most folk won't. Will you? Remove the power of the bullies by showing your child how much you love them. The life you save may be your own child's

  • THANX!!!

  • @rosenmusicgroup Really happy to feature you on the blog :)

  • i am from colombia...and homophobia is terrible here...especially for catholicism...I want to express my gratitude for your brave....thanks for your video...sorry for my bad english...

  • @SuperIdelfonso All we can do is to work, sometimes quietly, sometimes publicly, for simple human rights and acceptance. Sometimes we must plan to change our lives completely by bringing a skill that we have to a new nation that needs it. We know homosexuality is normal. We know The Pope says not. But he is an ignorant and bigoted old man, and not to be trusted.

  • Tim,

your honesty is a powerful message in itself.

Interesting that you are married to a woman, as I am sure many other men are. Perhaps you have a polyamorous arrangement where you can love a man too? Maybe there's another video in this?!

I hope your family is ok with you.

I think your message that it starts to get better when you are honest with yourself and accept yourself as you are, is key.

    Many thanks for your video.

  • @GJCoyne There is, for me, a difference between loving someone and acting upon that love. There are two men that I love, both loves are different. One is my friend Peter, a man who lives on the other side of the world, and a man to whom, as a boy, I almost dared to confide my love for the other one. I love him as a brother. The other is John, whom I have not seen since ~1970. Over him I obsessed. I made promises to my wife 31 years ago. I am not breaking them today. I love her deeply, you see.

  • wow

  • @tommyguy4 Indeed they are. Once we accept ourselves we become comfortable. We also become far less vulnerable to bullying.

  • "to thine own self be true" are words to live by. It does get better. Accepting ourselves as we are is a great start.
