Whilst making the first 'full-on' run of their 4th outright world speed sailing record attempt, Paul Larsen had a main foil failure at the end of the run. This resulted in a loss of down force to react the up force of the inclined wing and VESTAS Sailrocket took to the air.
Although the wind was unusually gusty varying between 18.6 and 26.3 knots throughout the run and swinging by 20 degrees, the team decided to push on in the hope of riding one lucky gust for long enough to break the 51.36 knot current record. Paul and Vestas Sailrocket peaked at 52.78 knots well before the flip despite still having four knots of 'boost' up his sleeve with the main flaps on the back of the wing.
Vestas Sailrocket designer, Malcolm Barnsley describes sailing Vestas sailrocket as riding a bike in a groove... on top of a narrow wall. It remains stable in a narrow band. This craft is a Mk1 prototype of a unique stability concept. It is not the ultimate version... but the team believe this current boat can still beat the existing record. After over 5 years of hard sailing, this will be the boats final record attempt.
So which is it - is it 7 days for another attempt as stated in the video, or is it the boat's final attempt?
