It may not be wasted because of what it is, but this video still may inspire someone to do this with decent tape. It's easy enough to accidentally tear up a tape. Why make a celebration of it like this video does?
The tape that was ruined in this video seems to be made by Schneider (according to the reel it sits on) And these Schneider tapes are terrible! I have one myself, and it takes only a few minutes of playing it until the heads are dirty. And if you have it cleaned off, you'll find out that the tape is barely good enough for voice recordings! So I don't think that this tape was really wasted.
Let me explain this to you: the tape that was ruined in this video seems to be made by Schneider (according to the reel it sits on) And these Schneider tapes are terrible! So I don't think that this tape was really wasted. Schneider tapes are just very very bad. But they were cheap back in the days.

Sorry, I am negatively impressed by this. Considering the rarity of good quality reel to reel tape, and the expense of what little is still available, this seems to have been a wasteful activity for no purpose. I find people tearing apart audio cassettes and video cassettes and wrapping the tape over people's trees and shrubs as a "joke". Not funny. Personally, as a tape recorder collector, I don't think this is an artistic statement or amusing, just sad and wasteful.
hey kids..DON'T DO THIS WITH YOUR FATHER'S ONES!!!!!

I hope this tape really was one of the horrible quality Schneider tapes! Oherwise, as other people said before, this would be a big waste of tape!

Very good points by Oviwolf and ClydeSight. That was a good tape down the drain.
