How about picking up any news paper across the country from 2004 to Nov 15, 2008 and looking for the Iraq war headline. Don't worry. It's there. Right above the top fold of the 1st page. If no American died that day, a civilian bombing will be featured. If nothing happened that day, a story from a prior week was run.

Now pick up a news paper from January 20, 2009 on and look & look for the Iraq / Afghanistan front page headline. You won't find a single one.
