Just because it has CGI in it doesn't make it great. It still looks enormously lacking and more like a rather naff pc game when it comes to the large space battles. Go watch the original Macross series as thats how those large Fleet battles should look. Even if the graphics aren't that great !!

Basically, The Shadow Chronicles is an extended version of the final 85th episode of Robotech (Symphony of Light). I actually did not enjoy this movie at all. It lacked the heart and soul of the original Robotech series. The animation and CG was bad. It looked more like American animation than Japanese anime and the music was uninspired. I felt sympathy for the Invid because they were never truly evil. They were just victims of the Robotech Masters and were only trying to survive.

Shadow Chronicles is a recent movie.

GONZO digimation has been releasing combined handdrawn/3DCG since 1999, I.G. since 2002 on large scale. This movie was released in 2006.

The original (if you can call a mash-up original) Robotech back in the 80ies was naturally completely handdrawn, at its day's Japanese good average quality.

Affordable 3DCG became available starting 1993, but it took years to have enough artists become proficient with it for large-scale use.

Look the bluemaggot that was a bit harsh in that if you would have taken the TIME to see when this came out it was an incredible piece of work. We didn't have the programs back then these animators tried 3D effects most cartoons were FLAT, to work with the limited tools of the time was an accomplishment. It kept the kids out of trouble and led for many fine youth to later persue fabulous careers. Many of which entered animation and modernization in animation art. Look at Totoro for one example.
