quote "I didn't put in any foot valves". hey, i never thought about freezing. cast iron pump bodies are very bad to crack and thats what the pitcher pumps are still made from. will watch some more vids asap.

@SustenanceNCovering Yes. I had taken it off a 80+ year old well. Very rusty. I was surprised it worked-pumped about 60 gallons of black goo before I got to water. It was a curtousy thing for a customer of mine that has a vacation home on an island. I felt bad for them trucking water in. I don't think they'll drink it because it's rusty tasting, but it's good for cooking, cleaning, bathing ect.

@podius Do you have a shallow well to hook that pump up to?

I rebuilt one last year. 2 things that can help: I used a torch and wd40 with multiple heat up and cool downs to get the leather holder to come loose. Also ground 2 sides of the bottom of the cup to get a good grip on the vise-shouldn't affect anything. Then I used an automotive cylinder hone to sand down the cylinder. Super smooth with few pits, vaseline will close remainder of the pits.

Yes, Mountainman grew up with one of them, is was on top of a cysterin, and it was inside the house, you didn't have to go out of the house to get water, the house was guttered to run into the cysterin, it was dug 1st and the house was built on top of it. And it kept them alive, it was about 1000 gal...They depended on rain....Thanks for shareing...

@KayakFisher01 thanks for telling me Kayak, it must be a browser thing, I guess.

@greatwf Your five stars show up as five stars for me.

@tripwire1000 In the video I show a pressurized pump. When I get around to rebuilding it I will be getting back in touch with you.You seem to have access to resources that I have yet to discover. The cage assembly on the pitcher pump looks exactly like the one on the pressurized pump, but when I put the entire assembly in the brass cylinder it seems somewhat loose. In the pitcher pump the assembly is actually tight. It is a 2x3.

i have made cup leathers in the past its simple all you need is a 3" peice of pvc some allthread 3/8 a round block of wood you have to get the right size its about 2 1/2 in holesaw soak your peice of leather in hot parafin wax drill a hole first through your leather and round wood you can also buy a cheap leather punch well any ways it goes like this althread--- /3/8 nut -fender washer -leather about 2 inches larger than the outside of pipe while leather is hot you pull it thru the pipe

@CGaquamarine3 There is a 99.9% chance that you are correct.

Very Useful videos! I've also seen these pumps at Lehmans. They're probably the same as what you have here.
-
@Sheila6325 I'm going to try to make the cage assembly from one of them new pumps fit in that old pressurized pumps. Harbor freight use to have a really junky hand pump for real cheap. It isn't on their web site but the next time I go to town I'll see if it is still on the shelf and check out the insides of it.

@SustenanceNCovering Yes indeed, What's the point of having a well, and no parts for the future!
I'm going to do as you are, and dig a couple more shallow wells, and will buy the extra repair parts when I pick up the new pump. I'm going to watch for an old pump at the farmers market too. I've seen some unusual ones here, so maybe I can restore a nice one. I also found out that my sons father in law knows pumps, so I may get lucky. Or I'll stick to the RED one. Parts are Important! Lots of them

@jeffgail99 The well took about 15 minutes to jet in once I was set up. The work was in getting all of the stuff out there and stood up. Total time was about 1 hour.
-
@Sheila6325 That's actually pretty wise. I plan on installing a total of 4 out here and buying a whole bucket full of parts myself.
This explains how to make pump leathers lifewater.ca/Appendix_L.htm
The site also has instructions for building a pump and drilling a well.
Do you have many pump leathers stocked? Also do they make rubber or synthetics that last longer?

@creektimothy Another subscriber told me how to make well leathers. The flapper valve would be easy enough if I had the tools, but untill he told me about soaking in parafin and hammering it into a mold I never would have guesed how the cup leather was made. Thanks for the link. And no I don't have any stocked. I need to.

@SustenanceNCovering way back when they used to not have foot valves (bottom check valves). you would have to keep a quart of water nearby to wet the leather and to prime it. thank the Lord somebody come up with a check valve. these are really good videos. my neighbors had a "double action" pump and it had a hose connection for a garden hose (they were not richer than us; they were smarter). their pump would work of of a windmill too cause it pumped up AND down. really nice.
adamfurstman 3 days ago
@adamfurstman I didn't put in any foot valves, because I wanted to be able to just let the water drain down in case of a hard freeze. I've got an old pump that you can hook a pump to but it is only single action and I still haven't been able to find the parts that I need to fix it.
