I am showing how a beginner learns our system. I want to explain first why we do vertical defense and the strikes are horizontal. The strikes are horizontal so that the learning will be a lot faster, but in real scenarios it can be at any angle you want. The bottom line for me in teaching Eskrima, is not really how to fight using a stick, but in a much bigger picture, like how you become a much improve martial arts practitioner using all parts of your body. Training in martial arts will make you a much healthier person as well and more disciplined !
Eskrima is a complete martial arts, meaning it is not only about the sticks. Practicing with sticks will improve your reflexes, like you never imagined before!
Learning how to use the stick or olisi is just but one part of Eskrima. In advance stages of Eskrima, you will learn how to use bladed weapons and empty hands applications( hands, elbows, knee kicks, foot kicks, grappling, head butts and even biting) after all , Eskrima was a tool for survival by the Filipinos. To survive means, to use whatever means necessary to stay alive... For private lessons and seminars, Anywhere in the world or in the Southern California area, contact me on this channel or email at VCavada@aol.com. I have a full calendar, so please allow, at least 3 months notice for scheduling purposes. Thank you and train regularly. Practice... Practice hard, but practice hard, Safely ! Master Virgil
The parry is very well executed. Would this drill be applicable to say build a flow between yourself and partner? My partner is determined to stay left side only and I practice both equally.

@drizzt777 It can be done with one part acting one side or interact back and forth with your sparring partner.
Start with the right forms first, then build up speed as you get the proper forms. After that you add, forward and backward movements as well. This training is one of the very core foundation in our system. Practice it well ! Best regards !

Great clips, Virgil! Just one observation on the forehand side counter. I was taught the number 2 and 3 as reverse to what you're showing to account for the shift in hand placement after strike number 1. It probably doesn't matter, but it is done on the backhand side so I continue the flow or pattern on the forehand side. Thanks.

@deluge24 Hello ! Nice of you to drop by my friend ! I changed that numbering to balance it on the other side, where the number 3 strike is at the opposite side, so I want the number 3 strike also to be on the opposite side.
That change will have some relevance when we do sparring drill number 10. Thanks...

@layogtabay On the first sparring drill which is known as the mother spar or foundation spar, I also have expanded it . When a student responds, the instructor now have 7 types of responses using his stick or hands, and has 5 versions or combinations of the drill. Some of my students are instructors themselves and liked my system and the way it is geared for actual empty hands applications. They have backgrounds not just of other systems of Eskrima, but other martial arts as well.
