Rainier climb from Aug. 09. Probably my last chance to go for the top before my body decides to retire from crazy stunts like this. Here are some tips to consider if you want to pull the trigger on this adventure.
1. The more you train, the better the whole trip will be. The last 100 yards to the top is a killer, but you still have to climb all the way back down to the parking lot the same day, so keep that in mind. On the way up, its a stairmaster type workout. On the way down, its lifting your legs to clear the soft snow, which wears you out quick.
2. The more you prepare, the better off you are. Time flies by quick when you are not organized. When you get on the bus to the Paradise parking lot, you better have everything sorted out and ready to go.
3. Food. What you eat now will affect you several hours later, so dont run out of gas at the wrong time.
4. Take plenty of pictures and video. Find a camera that can be operated with one hand with a glove on. The best pictures will be coming down the mountain during daylight. Everybody is roped up and moving, so there might be a 15 second pause here and there. This will be all the time you are going to get to take a picture.
