During the 60's Lorne Gibson was virtually the lone standard bearer for Country music in the UK. He appeared with his trio on many radio programmes beloved by people of a certain age such as 'Saturday Club', 'Easy Beat' and 'Country Meets Folk.' He would often sing songs by his favourite singer Marty Robbins and all the other big American names of the 60's. He had one minor hit with 'Red Roses For A Blue Lady', but to many UK Country fans he was the one guy who wouldn't have been out of place on the Grand Ole Opry. Lorne, who hailed from Edinbrough in Scotland deserves to be saluted for what he tried to do for Country music in the UK at time when it got very little promotion in the UK.

  • I was never a fan of British Country music, but made an exception in Lorne's case. He could easily have made a living in the States because he was very, very good. Your song wouldn't have been out of place sung by Roy Orbison or Gene Pitney in my opinion. I think the only hit Lorne had was 'Red Roses For A Blue Lady', but this should have charted. Apart from 'Easy Beat', I should imagine Lorne did 'Saturday Club' and 'Country Meets Folk' as well. Thanks for your interesting comment & great song.

  • its great to see some Lorne gibson songs on youtube he was the Bannerman for country music in the sixties,I wrote That girl i loved for him back then, myself and the sister used to do a lot of BBC radio broadcasts with Lorne and his Trio then along with Matt monroe and Kenny ball and the searchers, they were great times and we had some great laughs, i think the programe was called easybeat, knowing Lorne i think he will still be strumming that guitar on the other side, what a great guy RIP.

  • Hi Gary,

Thanks for that. I always played a Fender Jazz Bass from when the trio was formed in1962 up to when I left (in 1969 I think). Lorne's wife started playing some time after that, maybe in 1970.

  • RIP uncle Lorne (real name Eric Brown)

  • I was the bass player in his trio from 1962 to 1968. We were friends and gigging buddies to the end.

  • I always felt his voice was more suited to ballads...A favourite of mine was , " As Lovers Do "

  • I've never heard this great singer's name in UK and his song before. "Very Wonderful"
