As the exhausted crowd are hearded into the main plaza after a 45 minutes chase through the hilly streets under fire from the firework weilding devils, the continued harrassment of the devils, including extra mechanical bulls, burning bicycles and more overhead strings raining fire on the crowd was starting to seem superfluous. To a newcomer like me, it seemed that the whole amazing experience was destined to quietly die out in a disappointing slump into inertia and exhaustion.
Then it all went dark.
Suddenly all the monks and devils were together on the stage, unmasked, in an inferno of their own. For the first time it was clear they were on our side and the crowd went wild. The drums took control, and the town was united, with the devils and monks leading the mob in an increasingly frenzied and united ritual of excorcism, the traditional chant of "Meigas Fora!" replaced by something more final that sounded to my none Valenciano speaking ear like "Stay away!" - obviously not correct, but suitable never the less - it's hard to believe any evil spirits in the town hadn't got the message.
