My 1st attempt at building a coil gun.
consists of:
1x 12V SLA (sealed lead acid) battery,
1X ZVS Driver,
1X Re-Wound Flyback Transformer (5+5 Pri / 300 Sec)
1X Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) (50RIA120)
1x Capacitor Monitor/ Regulator circuit,
20x Capacitors rated 80uF @ 330V,
1x Mirco-Switch,
a Length of perspex tubing,
Almost a spool of 0.9mm Enammeled Copper Wire,
lots of 6mm UV stable Polycarbonate,
quiet a few stainless steel bolts (M3 / M4),
a few M3 nylon screws,
and a spare weekened with lots of sunshine :-D.

Notes for next coil gun (if i make another):
Use heavier projectile!
Spend more time experimenting to get most effiecent coil design!
Use bigger caps!
Actually finnish the gun and DON'T DROP IT!!!

Anyone Seeking the Circuit i designed for the LM3914 based regulator can download it from here:

Thanks For Watching :-).

  • why do you use a high voltage ZVS driver exactly?

  • @MrConnorJP: Because its about the cheapest, easiest to build, most robust, and easily adapted circuit ever! :-D

  • Nice indicator.

  • Nice video and funny ending with the R.I.P. For the project.

  • @Seuneglacise: oh the coil... what i done with that was made a few layers (windings) and added a few tapping points so i could alter the number of turns (& inductance) by simply choosing different tappings :-).

  • Oh I thought you made calculation about the number of turns of the coil that shoots.

  • @Seuneglacise: you mean the output current of the transformer?

  • @HVdischarge How do you calculate it ?

  • @HVdischarge That sounds like a great idea, and as for that secondary coil, I could get an arc to stretch up to 1cm, so I believe there is plenty of current.

  • @3asiancubers: :-). I was going to try something similar if i ever built another one (which i probably will never get around to now).i was going to use a Quad Op Amp. And calibrate the 1st Led to 25% charge, second to 50% etc... Would be alot cheaper and easier than building the lm3914 circuit, which would leave a few more pennies for caps or SCR.
