This video was taken in Waldport, OR on March 22, 2009 of the Spring Rufous Hummingbird Migration. The Rufous Hummingbirds leave their wintering grounds in Mexico and follow the west coast to their breeding grounds in the Pacific Northwest. Some of these hummingbirds head all the way into Alaska. The first males arrive at our location in February. The females and sub-adults arrive a few weeks later. There are also Anna's Hummingbirds in the video which stay in our area all year. BTW, a group of hummingbirds is called a "charm." See www.birdsamore.com for more hummer information. Music by Rodrigo y Gabriela - www.rodgab.com, with thanks to Rubyworks.

  • What street are you located on? I used to live out on Wakonda Beach Road, and had the hummers coming in my house all the time. Now, I go where the Navy takes me.

  • We are located off Hwy. 34 around the 4 mile marker. We have the Anna's Hummingbirds all year. Looking forward to February and seeing the first male Rufous arrive marking the beginning of the 2010 migration. Wishing you well and enjoy your TOD.

  • Thanks for sharing this! I'm moving from the UK to Washington State this year and the house where I'll be living now has feeders outside and rufous hummers visiting - can't wait to see them for real!

  • Best hummer wishes for your new home in WA. You will also have Anna's Hummingbirds all year so keep your feeders filled and cleaned even during the winter months. The best solution is 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. The hummers also prefer C&H pure cane sugar rather than beet sugar. Happy Humming!

  • Awesome video! Where did you get those metal rain covers? I just bought my 1st feeder, and would love to get one for mine.

  • They are called "humbrellas" by Aspects. They run about $25 each and have a lifetime guarantee. Google "humbrella" and you can find the best price. Amazon carries them.

  • This is an amazing video!

  • I'm now finally here in Washington State - on the North Olympic Peninsula to be exact - is it too soon to hang our feeder up yet? The weather here has been glorious just recently so I'm hoping the hummers arrive soon. :)

  • Thank you so much for your good wishes! :-) My husband in WA has also mentioned Anna's hummers before, so we're hopeful we can attract them too! I shall make sure I follow your advice with the cane sugar. Thanks and all the best!

  • I had no idea that we could experience the same sort of large hummingbird groups in Oregon that people in Arizona and New Mexico do! This is great!

  • can't wait till MY hummers arrive! :)

  • Ah! So they're called Humbrellas, lol. Catchy. Thanks, I'll go look them up now.
