This is my wife and her 496 Chevelle. Pump gas, flat tappet, dual plane, 3:31 gears, 3500 stall, full exhaust, 3800 lbs, old ET Streets. She uses it to get groceries and takes it to her Mary Kay appointments. All three of our kids LOVE riding in the back and going cruising.
She averages 13 mpg on the highway with the 750 double.
Update 7/07- On 93 octane, the budget 496 made 548HP at 5900 rpm and 574TQ with big tube (2 1/4") headers at the crank on a Superflow 902 dyno.
UPDATE 11/08- After three years and 5k street miles, 10 dyno pulls, and 50+ passes at the track, Leah has run a best of 11.57 @115.48 on pump gas and M/T Drag radials, all motor. We tried a Powershot system on it 11/1/08, and with a 1/2 throttle launch went 11.07@120mph.

  • goddamnit those stupid ricer sounds sound is annoying

  • what are the cam specs on that?

  • @cpmotors roger that, 8360 is fine,,your OEM 781's will work great after you do trick's to them, I dont know what your cam is now as I didnt read past posts, but as you said its a street car... but do the same to intake.. I beleave your running a 1/2 fuel-line ? if not install one, trust me... I know for sure it will be in the hi-10's after a little mods your doing & cut a good light...but anycase I wish you the best & be safe...

  • @ajtoy454 no 2 step either, just simple MSD 8360 distributor for now. I'm guessing it will end up with a 4800 or so converter, will have to see how well the OEM 781 ovals work after I get done with them and what I end up with for a camshaft. Thanks-

  • @cpmotors Oh..ok..now we talking...lol...4300 sounds nice !!! sounds like you hit prob 4800....or so..just wondering if your gunna use a 2-step "thats if a MSD use used" that would help alot... I wish you all luck on winter project....Al

  • @ajtoy454 Nope- "3500" stall flashed to about 4300 from idle, makes boatloads of torque in the area so doesnt need a brake. New setup will be getting a custom Coan converter to match roller cam and headwork I'm doing right now.

  • @cpmotors gotcha, just stab and go ha? not even a trans-brake? to bring up the stall....i understand its a street car but still....atleast with a t-brake u be in your power band,,,,just a thought.....

  • @ajtoy454 launches at idle

  • @cpmotors roger that, here in nyc its 11:99 or quicker needs cage, or i got my figures wrong? correct me if iam wrong? but anycase it runs tough, nice times, wht you launch it at?

  • @ajtoy454 11:49 is the cutoff for the bar- so its not a problem.

And just to clear up everyone trying to let me know 4:11 are streetable- I am well aware- have them in my car and have used from 2.73-4.56 gears in various vehicles. They have their place. Bottom line this is a street car that gets driven- its first and primary goal. It happens to go to the track on occasion with my wife as the driver. It could be faster with some changes but again- its a street car, not a race car.
