Harold Varmus delivered the NCI Director's Address at the annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Oncology (June 2011) where he talked about the unprecedented opportunities to accelerate progress against cancer and NCI's plans to move research forward even as it deals with budgetary challenges. He provides updates on key initiatives related to cancer genomics -- Center for Cancer Genomics, The Cancer Genome Atlas, and the TARGET program. He also addresses changes to NCI's clinical trials system including restructuring of cooperative groups, developing new trial designs that take advantage of advances in genomics and biomarkers. Other NCI initiatives related to global health aimed at reducing the burden of cancer throughout the world, the provocative questions initiative, and collaborations with other federal agencies are also addressed.
