We took all these things into consideration prior to adopting... Not including the lifespan, behavioral needs, the need to root and graze, personal bedding/space, individual personality, the frequent (and often cute) sounds and noises to expect, intelligence and being prone to boredom... and of course determining if we had the will power to not give in to constant "need" (in their mind) for food. We, however, do not plan to eat Peter.

All good tips. I wish more farmers would do this.

@MultiWingnut The labeling of meat is so vague all accross the united states that it makes it difficult or even impossible to tell where your meat comes from. However you can rest assured that meat that is labeled "organic" is going to mean that the animal lived a better life to some degree compared to "non organic animals". If you are interested in educating yourself you should check out River Cottage Meat Book. It is a rediculously good book on all types of meat and farming methods.

@MultiWingnut. I bought live pigs to fatten up and butcher. I did this to avoid the pork from big commercial feedlots. It isn't cheaper. I dont have a farm. I built a small barn and fenced in an area forthe pigs. I know the raiser and she only feeds grains and grain mixes along with surplus veggies and clean water. I am slowly adding to my garden so I will feed some tops and roots to the pigs too. The only way to be 100% sure of the quality is to raise them yourself.

You can feed your own pigs and properly treat them. So you will know that you meat will be properly treated forever.

How do I make sure that the meat I buy comes from a farm where the animal was properly treated and not from a factory?
