@dallasgambit you are wack. being good at gi will make you a million times better at no gi. BJJ should be learned with a gi so you do things properly, you can watch an MMA fight and be able to tell who does gi and who didnt take the time to learn everything the proper way by how they throw up their armbars. even in the UFC i see people doing them wrong.

@ReysWrap it's to expose the nipple for the added humiliation factor :P
actually (not expert opinion), i'm assuming that using your left hand to grab the end of the lapel as opposed to grabbing the collar reduces the possibility of his right hand attempting to shake off your left. If it were to remain on the collar, it seems that there's more risk of him nullifying the choke by removing that hand. Just a guess.

Hmm i don't even remember ever being taught this or anyone using it on me.. We usually had palms facing up with the thumb inside gi or 4 fingers in the gi and thumb outward for the choke..

If you have never learned this choke you need to go ask your instructor why. It is one of the most basic chokes in BJJ.
