The flagmen at Blakesburg operate as tower control on a visual basis. All eyes are out of the cockpit and trained on these guys. The midfield flagman is shown here. When the red flag goes up the approach end flagmen take the cue and put their red flag up, barring landings until the airplane on the ground has cleared the runway. When the recent arrival is down and clear, then the midfield green flag tells the approach flagmen that they can raise their green flag also and permit another landing. If you land on the red flag you will hear about it in no uncertain terms, whether you are rich and famous, or just a luscombe pilot. All seem created equal with regard to safety at Blakesburg - one of its most endearing qualities.

A pilot has to be able to recognize color, as per FAR 14 CFR Part 67 regulations or they dont qualify for a medical and thus they dont fly.
