Called one of ba gua's premier fighting sets by Gong Bao Tian, Yin Yang Zhang (Palm) trains ba gua quan's reputed ferocity together with softness derived from yielding and returning joints. The Ba Gua Song states "yin yang hands turning above and below..."

  • Very cool! I had never seen this one before. Thank you for posting. Seeing things like this helps keep us going out here on the East coast. One year I hope to see again the long sword form and the second two man form.

Right now five of us are practicing the 2,4,8,64, heart form, steady step, and first two man. Some of the guys know the broadsword form. Attributes have become far more important then the forms though of late. We keep working things.

    Hope all is well!

  • Thanks. How have you learned the ba gua jian (sword)? Linear set or like pao chui in the circle?

  • I believe it is the external linear set broadsword form. It is the one form mentioned I do not know. Ken and I were there first for a long time but it was taught after we had to go. I have only practiced it a couple of times, but two others remember the movements.

  • Is there any way you or your classmates can send a clip of your ba gua straight sword and ba gua broadsword form to me? That way, I'd feel there's an engagement taking place between us, rather than just me performing for you.

  • Great performance!

Why would it be one of the premier fighting sets?

I think it is short and sweet, but no more different than the other main ones? It uses a lot of elbows, but perhaps it is a better circular set?

  • Thanks. I think it is premier because they characterize the most often used fighting techniques in this system: alternating elbows, hitting high and low, qiao tui and spins. Circular sets in this system train various aspects of (nei xiu) inner cultivation, while linear forms were the platform for combat study through (wai lian) external training.

  • I agree. In advanced training a shift is made from repertoire building to perfection of specialized skills.

  • Very insightful.

The system is designed around the sword theme.

  • Nice form. It's very short. The Ten or Steady Step form is also short. The high level forms all seem to be short.

  • Looks like the jian in substance.
