Children's Laureate, Anthony Browne on the importance of pictures books and why Gorilla is a good book to use in the classroom.

Gorilla by Anthony Browne is one of the six classic children's books included in the Read & Respond Engage Ages 7-9 Pack. Gorilla is about a little girl called Hannah who loves Gorillas. Hannah writes books, draws pictures, watches TV programmes about Gorillas but has never seen a real one. Hannah has never seen one because her Father is always too busy and has never taken her to the Zoo.

Gorilla is included in the Read & Respond Engage series because it is a great book to use with children in the classroom as there are lots of different layers to the story. The pictures and words work together and apart so the pictures tell us things that the words do not. Anthony Browne talks to teachers about the importance of picture books and how we should not push children into reading non pictures books until they are ready as they may lose the enjoyment in reading.
