Asif Ali Zardari has met Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who attended Zardari's swearing in. The two leaders pledged to work together to combat terrorism in their two countries.
The two presidents say they will extend cooperation to hit back at terrorism and establish peace in the region.
And Karzai warned civilian casualties are not acceptable.
Hamid Karzai says, "We cannot tolerate civilian casualties - not even one. Therefore, the right mechanism has to be established, foolproof to avoid civilian casualties, in Pakistan and in Afghanistan, in whatever manner we can do it."
Karzai says the two countries first need a broader, deeper understanding to fight terrorism. Next comes assistance and participation from the international community.
Zardari says Pakistan is also a victim of terrorism and the government has a comprehensive plan to fight it.
Tuesday's meeting is seen as a goodwill sign to ease tensions, as Pakistani-Afghan relations have been strained over the anti-terrorism issue.
Afghan officials have accused Pakistan of not doing
enough to stop militants from crossing the long, porous border.
