Update 20th January 2010
To those asking for a higher resolution version, Chris Korda of Fractice, has done an excellent 'cover version' of my zoom. Uses the same final cords and is identical, but in much higher quality and nice colours . 5 Months render!
See it here.

18th December 2009.
Thank's for all the views everyone!, 160K plus!. Never expected that much, and thanks for the comments, some interesting reading.

Original description...29th May 2007.
Mandelbrot. Deep zoom. 2^316!. Thats 315 zooms.

Note. zoom doesnt deviate from the X axis, to save render time.

First frame doubles in size every second.
You world need a monitor 2^316 times the size of a normal one to view the whole of the first frame by the time you get to the last frame.
That's approx 2^176 times the size of the known universe. Thats just so big you cant comprehend it.
Done using fractalExtreme.
Dell D420, dual core,
2Hrs 30 mins render on the dell d420.
Sorry about the jerkiness and loss of definition, I had to get it below 100MB. The original avi was 223mb!

Technical info.
Program FractalExtreme
Render time 150 mins. dell d420 dual core 1.2Ghz, 2 Gb ram.

  • Nothing is bigger that the box in which it is contained...

  • @manot87

Unless there are many boxes, just one of which we call 'The known universe'.

  • October update.

Thanks guys, never expected this many views!!. Again, good comments as well, rather more thougtful than the usual stuff. :)

Anyway..I found a 3d fractal program called 'mandelbulb'. (google it, first entry, its free to download, google images 'mandelbulb' for examples).

Amazing program, full 3d zoomable and navigable mandelbrot!.

    I shall post a 3d zoom soon.

  • Wow, thanks for all the views!. and the comments, some interesting ideas.

Ok, I did'nt put music on because it's hard to think of something everyone would like, so I leave it up to you.

My choice would be 'time captives' by arthur browns kingdom come. (Omitting the first 2 mins of the song). Music and lyrics fit nicely.

  • If this fractal can fit on my flash drive and it is bigger than the universe, does that mean the universe can fit on my flash drive?

  • all of a sudden i wanna grow long hair and a beard and play age of aquarius over again while watching this

  • Fractal-tastic - I'm impressed! That was some trip.

  • Any screenshot from this video would make an EPIC desktop background!!!

  • @JJBerthume I know that your comment was a joke but I feel compelled to say this: a program that calculates a fractal just has the calculator and a viewer; your computer does all the work. The program itself does not contain the entire fractal zoomed in; just a calculation :)

  • @JJBerthume now can you imagine that its even possible no one believed me its called infinite potencial

  • @JJBerthume yes

  • Great job! Great mandelbrot! )))

  • Fantastic! Thanks metafis! I keep getting flashbacks when I look at some species of Brassica.

  • This is my favorite fractal zoom- listen with vangelis in the background and watch creation!! many blessings :)
