In 2007, Plano Senior High School lost in double overtime of the state semifinals to the eventual 5A Texas State Champs. Burkhead finished the year with over 1800 yards rushing, over 500 yards receiving, and 34 touchdowns, to include touchdowns pass receiving, rushing, passing, and one during a electrifying punt return in the state quarterfinals.

Burkhead has played over six different positions at Plano since starting at fullback his freshman year. If Burkhead was not playing offense he would be a dominating and punishing strong safety or safety on defense. Burkhead was also a 1st team all district basketball player at Plano in 2007, and was a key reserve on Plano's 5A State Basketball Championship team in 2005-2006.
