"The B-side [of 'Once I Had a Sweetheart'], 'I Saw An Angel', was a very different animal but also one of the most striking performances issued under the band's name. Unmistakably a Jansch song, it juxtaposed one of his most unusual lyrics with the closest the band came to a modern, progressive rock sound. It was in keeping with the kind of sound and direction Bert had taken with the harder-edged tracks on his 'Birthday Blues' album. John plays superb lead acoustic throughout and, as with 'Travelling Song', harmonises on a second track during his solo. the song also marks the first appearance on record of Terry's fearless falsetto vocals - another distinctive weapon in the band's armoury of sound.
