  • Perhaps I should make a video demonstrating this. What do you think? BTW, never pry the sideplate off. You will warp it and it will never fit right again.

  • @jdbsks Good idea! Looking forward to it.

  • I wouldn't mind doing one, but I don't have an example. Also, taking the sideplate off a S&W/Taurus-type revolver is tricky, can lead to cosmetic damage, and isn't necessary for basic cleaning.

If I recall correctly, the forward sideplate screw retains the cylinder crane, and the ejector rod is reverse-threaded. It is possible to get the cylinder loose from a S&W revolver for easier cleaning. The GP100 is a much more robust design which lends itself to real field-stripping.

  • I also believe that the GP100 is a better and stronger revolver than the S&W.

S&W side plates are not dificult to remove. After removing the grip and all side plate screws, turn the revolver on its side where the sideplate is facing down, and tap on the edge of the revolver between the hammer and cylinder release with a wooden hammer handle. The side plate should drop free after two or three blows. You may want to keep a rag under the revolver to protect the side plate when it falls out.

  • Are you planning on a video for S&W revolvers?
