  • I find myself imagining a story about this sub.

Two modern Spanish engineers, who despise each other.

A younger up and coming genius #2, and an older accomplished pro #1.

#1 admires the Ictineo II, but says to his son and daughter, "If only I could go back in time, if only I could meet Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol, what advances in science I could contribute to his invention!"

"But," says his son, "the sub, it is so fabulous!"

"Ahh! I could make it better!" #1 says almost derisively.

  • @jaimie8888 Monturiol had the misfortune to be born in one country at a time when the officer saw mentality with very bad eyes was clever enough to invent a machine that represents an important advance. So the idea that prevailed in Spain "invent others (foreigners)."

  • Esta es la segunda nave diseñada por Monturiol, inventor del submarino.

  • And when they meet again, the #2 engineer discovers a change in #1 himself, and in the end, #2 changes his attitude and begins to admire #1, even as #1 now admires Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol.

  • And little by little, #1 discovers how genteel and likable Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol is as a man, and is charmed by his personality.

FInally, #1 gives up, and leaves a small donation to help fund the construction of the Ictineo II, unchanged from the original design.

#1 comes back to the future, and his attitude is changed toward the designer of the Ictineo II.

  • #1 pretends to be a modest but inspired gentleman, who has ideas.

One by one, he suggests modern improvements to the Ictineo II, a conning tower, a better propeller design, forward diving planes, and so on.

And one by one, Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol explains why they can't do that; a taller conning tower would unbalance the Ictineo II's equilibrium, a better propeller would be too expensive and heavy, forward diving planes would snag on kelp and diver's air lines.

  • "I'm not so sure," says #1's daughter doubtfully, "you even like the man."

So #1 somehow goes back in time, and meets Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol in his workshop, busily designing the Ictineo II.

#1 pretends to be an unknown engineer of some accomplishment, and flatters Narcís Monturiol i Estarriol, and gets a dinner engagement, and they exchange ideas.

    They talk at length.

  • Qué curioso, una antigua nave submarina!
