Charlotte Muslims Respond to "Obsession" Distribution

It is indeed very concerning when messages that distort the image of an entire religion and endanger the safety of the innocent and law-abiding majority of its followers are promoted and spread by our local and national media outlets for financial and or political gains. The Muslim American community is very alarmed by as well as disappointed in the Charlotte Observer, the Raleigh News & Observer, and all other newspapers and media outlets that are partaking in this shameful campaign.

As part of its response to these events, MAS-Freedom of North Carolina hosted press conferences on Sunday, September 14th, 2008 in both Charlotte as well as Raleigh in order to voice the concerns of Muslims with regards to the mass-scale distribution of the controversial and politically driven DVD "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West."

In Charlotte, the press conference was attended by representatives from Fox Charlotte, News 14 Carolina, and Channel 9 Eyewitness News. Representatives of a number of Charlotte area Islamic Centers as well as a number of concerned Muslims were also in attendance.

We urge all concerned citizens to contact the Charlotte Observer and any other media outlet that is involved in promoting these distorted and dangerous messages and express to their disapproval of these actions. It is up to us as caring and compassionate leaders within our community to strive for the safety and welfare of our brethren, regardless of their faith, ethnic, or cultural background. As an American there is no religion I have experienced that is more scary than Christianity. The violence, oppression of women, fear of other groups is only partially manifested in this hateful DVD. You would have to live in America as a non-christian-jew to know the extent of this groups desire for power and intolerance for women and people of color. This group does not represent most Americans, only the fearful and ignorant.

To my knowledge, the film, from the very start to the very end, to only talk about the minority of Muslims who are extremists.

I find it sad and pitiful that at this point, all you, and apparently many Muslims in America, care about is to say that this isn't Islam. So what? Who cares? The threat is still there. When are you going to at least tackle that issue? Who is worse? The people who make movies like these, or the terrorists who embarrass your religion?
