The debate regarding Macedonian Greekness traces all the way back to antiquity itself- it's over a 2000 year old argument. However in ancient times they did conclude that Macedon was indeed Greek by allowing participation in the Olympics.

@dragmio It was a battle between Greek states. Just as the Peloponnesian war; are you going to say that either Athens or Sparta or their allies were Greek? "Greek" in context of antiquity was defined in theory as people of the Homeric tradition (they read Homer). Macedon remained a kingdom ala bronze age Greece, while the southern states were poleis- for that reason there was animosity. However in the Olympics (in which only Greeks could participate), the Macedonians were allowed after a debate
